Strictly Social April Photos w/ Lina & Kissey Asplund

On April 30, 2008 Strictly Social was once again in effect. And what a night it was! Not only did we feature a showcase of Lina’s label Moodstar Recordings, presenting three new artists to our audience, but we were also treated to special performances from Lina herself and Sweden’s Kissey Asplund!

The night began with a soothing acoustic set by The Berriz. This was their first ever live performance and they entranced the crowd with their beautiful sounds. Up next was Ki Johnson who got the crowd on their feet with her rousing gospel vocals. This girl can SING! D’Cheri followed with her sexy, jazz flavored sound. Then not only did Lina sing a special Happy Birthday to Nu-Soul editor Norman Mayers, but she sang two tracks including the stepper’s anthem “Feel The Love.” Capping off the evening was the debut West Coast performance from Kissey Asplund. Believe the hype! Kissey’s electric performance and quirky vocals had everyone bouncing in approval.

Big thanks to everyone who made this event a reality: the friendly and professional staff and talent of Moodstar Recordings, Lina for being a gracious event host, Catherine Carter at Funky Dumpling, R2 Records for sending Kissey promos, Kissey Asplund herself for rocking the crowd, and the Strictly Social team for holding it down once again. We have some hot shit lined up for next month so stay tuned!

inka one has been busy. Since returning to Los Angeles in late 2005, he’s toured the U.S. 5 times DJing for the likes of The Procussions (Rawkus Records), Pigeon John (Quannum Projects), and Diverse (Chocolate Industries), while sharing the stage with artists like The Roots, Digable Planets, KRS One, Slick Rick, Jurassic 5, and MF Doom, to name a few. Not to mention gracing the turntables with DJ legends like Q-Bert, Pete Rock, Quantic, Craze, J.Rocc, and Krush, along the way. Blending real hip hop bangers, funked up breaks, downtempo gems, and whatever else he pulls out of the crate, inka has rocked crowds from coast to coast…sweatband in hand. He’s also found time to establish an acclaimed monthly party known as BOOMBOX, which brings Hip Hop’s elite to The Grand Star in Chinatown every 1st Saturday. Repping both Soul.Scienz and the Beathackerz Kollectiv, inka’s on the move…don’t sleep.

Special Live Performance:
Paul Dateh and Inka One
Live Violin & DJ Set

Originally, Paul Dateh was only supposed to be a violinist. Beginning his violin studies at the age of four, it seemed that Dateh’s future in the classical industry was set in stone. But, on his first day at The University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music, Dateh suddenly dropped his major in Violin Performance and enrolled in the Jazz Studies program instead. The move shocked his colleagues as it was hard to understand why anyone would walk away from fourteen years of classical training to begin learning an entirely new musical discipline. But, Dateh knew that he wanted to be more than just a classical musician; his goal was to become a musician, in every possible way.

Today, as a singer, an award-winning songwriter, and an instrumentalist, it would appear that Dateh is on track to achieving his goal. His work can be heard on releases by various artists within both mainstream and underground hip hop circles, and he can currently be seen performing throughout the United States with his band “The Live Movement”.

Straight from France, the seductive soul stylings of:

She has Morocco in her blood, Paris in her heart and music in her soul. Ilhame (aptly meaning “inspiration” in Arabic) always knew that music would be her constant muse. Born in the 17th District of Paris, Ilhame’s first musical experience was alongside her older sister, having innocent fun. As a little girl she loved to imitate famous musicians, reproducing mostly soul, funk and R&B stars such as Luther Vandross, Rose Royce and Bill Withers. At grade school she was urged by her music teacher to pursue her love for music, who noticed Ilhame’s natural talents as a vocalist. Thus, it was merely by pure instinct that Ilhame followed suit, followed her soul, and followed music.

Supported by DJ Fun (of Saian Supa Crew fame), a long-time friend and producer/sound engineer, Ilhame decided it was time to finance her own project and placed her career in her own hands. She decided that it was time to record an album. In 2000, a meeting brought forth a continuing collaboration with Max Valetudie, hip-hop/R&B/French Reggae producer (NTM, Raggasonic, Princess Erika, Tonton David). Lyricists and musicians such as Pascal Hospital, Marion Michau, and rap artist Kodjo have also lent their talents to Ilhame’s work in progress. In 2005, Ilhame traveled to the U.S. - Los Angeles to be exact - to record a major part of her album, an experience which furthered her desire continue making music. As Ilhame states, “I live, eat and sleep music. This is what I want to do. This is what I love to do.”

New Interview: Kissey Asplund

Taking her cues from artists like Erykah Badu and Vikter Duplaix, Kissey melds genres with an understated yet quirky jazz delivery over butter smooth lounge beats and broken beat electronica. Her debut album Plethora has been creating a stir around the globe, heralding the emergence of a new star in the world of electronic soul.

Fusion: A NextAid Benefit Photos w/ Samantha James & Black Spade

Next Aid and Nu-Soul joined forces on April 12, 2008 for Fusion, an event that raised awareness and money for children orphaned by AIDS in Africa that also showcased the newest talents of San Francisco-based label Om Records. Black Spade warmed up the stage with his special blend of hip-hop and soul. Then the lovely Samantha James took over with her band in tow for a graceful and enchanting performance of loungey house grooves. DJs Destroyer, Glenn Red, and Jayvon served up a variety of beats from underground to commercial to satisfy the diverse crowd. The night was a rousing success and we look forward to doing more events with NextAid and Om Records!
